By Plane

Flying directly to the Region from abroad may not be the most cost-effective option. Flying to larger hubs (Paris / Barcelona / London) and then using a low cost airline to arrive in the region, or using a Train (see below) is more cost effective. There are three airports in the area:

  1. Marseille [MRS]: Largest regional airport. Both large airlines and low-cost. Halfway between Marseille and Arles.

    • Car Rental: Wide range of rental car services.

    • Public Bus: services also run to the city center of Marseille (L091 bus).

    • Train: Within a short bus ride (13A) from the airport you can also access the TER train network (Vitrolles - Aéroport Marseille Provence) which goes to the city center (Marseille Saint Charles)

  2. Montpellier [MPL]: Smaller regional airport, 1 hour west of Arles. Largely low-cost airlines and some irregular large airlines. Wide range of rental car services.

    • Note: there is no public transport between Montpellier airport and Arles / Marseille

  3. Nimes [FNI]: Smallest regional airport . 40 minutes north of Only served by low-cost airlines. Limited rental car services.

    • Note: there is no public transport between Montpellier airport and Arles / Marseille

By Train

Taking a train from within Europe to Marseille or Arles is highly economical, and hassle free. The main local train stations are:

  1. Arles (Gare Arles SNCF): located walking distance from the city centre.

    • Trains from Paris (~4 hours by TGV with one change in Avignon)

    • Direct trains from Marseille Saint-Charles (1 hour by TER)

    • Trains from Marseille Provence Airport (18 minute bus to station, 1 hour by TER)

  2. Marseille Saint-Charles: located close to the city centre (please be watchful with your belongings upon arrival, big city stations in France are hotspots for pickpockets)

    • Direct trains from Paris (~3 hours by TGV)

    • Bus from Marseille Provence Airport (L091, 45 minutes)

Travelling between Arles and Marseille

There are two main options for travelling between Arles and Marseille:

Train: TER from Marseille Saint -Charles to Arles Gare SNCF (1 hour)

Car: Drive from Marseille to Arles city centre (1 hour)
